HOT MOURNING

At the beginning of the year, Singapore artistes, Fann Wong and Christopher Lee tied the know within a hundred days of the death of Lee's father. This is referred to as hot mourning.

Now this particular custom is again being highlighted with news of the demise of Andy Lau's rumoured father-in-law. The late Mr Chu died about 8 days ago and according to Chinese customs, Chinese couples with marriage plans have to be married within 100 days of a bereavement of a parent, or wait three years.

One old Chinese tradition to honour a deceased parent is for the children to mourn for three years which means there shouldn't be much merry making or celebrations, and weddings being red occasions is a form of celebration. If a marriage has been planned prior to the death of the parent, the children could get married within 3 months or 100 days. This is called "hot mourning". Otherwise they have to wait till after 3 years.

Let's see if we get to see the 'postponed' wedding ceremony of Andy Lau and Carol Chu really taking place within this period.
