Does the flower of the Guzmania remind you of the pineapple? I am sure you'd most probably say yes. In Chinese it is known as 'Huang Li Hua' in Chinese or Pineapple Flower. It is popular because its Hokkien name 'Ong Lai Huay' signifies the 'arrival of wealth and prosperity'.
And YES it is around the Chinese New Year that the florists will send this plant because of its auspicious sounding name.

Guzmania is a type of bromeliad. The most important bromeliad from an economic point of view is the pineapple.
