AUSPICIOUS PAPER CUTTINGS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR

On 23 January 2012, the Chinese welcome the Year of the Dragon.  Now this is the most auspicious of the 12 Chinese Zodiac and the image of the dragon is considered to be mighty auspicious.  Nowadays, the businessmen have incorporated the traditional art of paper cutting into their products.

As the Chinese are very into symbolism, they have incorporated auspicious elements into the Chinese New Year designs.   The most popular Chinese New Year symbolism is the red Fook 福 character.  Fook means "blessings, happiness".  Now during the new year, this character is prominently displayed on the entrances of Chinese homes. This sign is sometimes seen hanging upside down, since the Chinese word 倒 "upside down", is sounds like or 到 "arrive" in Chinese.  Therefore an upside down Fook symbolizes the arrival of luck, happiness, and prosperity.
