BANANA TREES AND GHOSTS

Many Chinese do not usually plant banana trees inside their gardens or backyards in Malaysia. If you spot a house with a banana tree here then the likelihood of this house being occupied by Malaysian Chinese is less than 10%.
I have seen Malays and Indians planting banana trees in their gardens but not the Chinese, the reason is to them the banana trees is something like a 'ghost hotel' or 'ghost inn' . There is a belief that if you tie a red string on the banana tree with the other end of the string tied to your bed at night, ghosts will come to you. Don't belief? Why not give it a try and then write in to tell me about your experiene.
The Chinese believe that banana trees are a favourite dwelling place for ghosts. The Ba Jiao Gui 芭蕉鬼- "Banana-tree ghost" is a female ghost which dwells in a banana tree, often haunting under the tree by appearing at night and wailing sadly, sometimes carrying a baby.
