Feng Shui for Bathrooms – Everything You Need to Know about Toilets, Tubs and Sinks

Did you know that there’s a World Toilet Day? There is; it’s November 19th and its purpose is to call attention to the 2.5 billion people who lack access to clean sanitation, and the death and illness that result from that lack of access. Toilets get a bad rap in feng shui because everyone assumes that they ruin your feng shui.

But that’s not the whole story.

In feng shui, toilets and bathrooms can actually solve a number of problems. Besides that, I wouldn’t want to live in a house without a toilet, and I bet you wouldn’t either.

So what’s the straight poop on toilets and feng shui? What’s important is to understand the kind of energy that toilets and bathrooms have. That energy is yin water energy.

In particular, it’s a draining water energy.

Too many homes today have draining water only in the form of kitchen sinks, laundry rooms, and bathrooms, but not enough in the way of generating water energy, such as fountains and waterfalls. But that’s another subject…

What’s key to understand about bathrooms is that they drain your luck, and in a given sector, drain the luck that sector is associated with. Of course, it’s hard to find the exact best spot to place a toilet. In fact, there’s no perfect place other than where there’s an affliction in the home’s natal chart. A quick survey of flying star energy will show you where a toilet could become a problem-solver.

Here’s the top tips you need to know to settle the debate once and for all.

Toilets can solve problems.

It’s not widely known, but when the annual or monthly feng shui changes, there can be afflictions that create severe health or financial problems. This is particularly true of the 7 violence star, Five Yellow and 2 Black. If there’s a toilet or water closet in the sector where there’s an affliction, keeping the door closed on it will literally flush the problem away.

You shouldn’t activate or harmonize toilets and bathrooms with direction they’re in.

Many people think they should harmonize their bathroom with the direction or sector where they’re located. And many feng shui sites actually promote that you should. But that’s not the right way to handle bathroom and toilet energy.

For example, if your toilet is in your relationship (southwest) sector, adding red and gold colors and earth elements will energize the toilet energy. What that does is energize the relationship energy with the negativity, yin water and draining energy of the toilet. Not a good thing at all! Your relationships and love prospects, if you’re single, will be greatly reduced.

Toilets under stairs make for difficult children, infertility

Toilets under stairs cause problems with children.

In many homes, there is a powder room located under the stairs. This can cause infertility problems. It can also cause children to be difficult and disobedient. The best way to handle this is to keep the door to the bathroom closed and decorate it in colors appropriate for the sector where it falls.

Think of it another way, imagine your toilet is in your wealth sector. Adding energy that’s harmonious is like writing a bad check and then knowing you’re overdrawn, and continuing to write more checks.

Toilets and bathrooms should employ the reducing or destroying element in feng shui.

This reduces the effect that the toilet or bathroom has on your home and that particular sector of your life, such as your career, health, or relationships. Here’s a breakdown on the effects of toilets in their given sectors.

North – affects business, generating income, career and job prospects. Harms relationships at work and presents obstacles to advancement. Add ceramics in here, or a large stone.
South – affects your reputation, increases gossip. Decorate in blue or black colors to suppress the energy.
East – affects oldest son, family relationships and health. Decorate in white or red colors and keep brightly lit. Add candles.
West – affects children in the house, creative endeavors, fertility is affected. Use water colors, elements and themes here.
Southwest – affects relationship, woman of the house, marriage prospects. Place plants, flowers here and paint white, green, or brown.
Northeast – affects education, decision-making, thinking. Add plants here and decorate with white, green or brown.
Southeast – affects wealth, creates financial loss, bad investments, savings dwindle, harms oldest daughter. Add metal elements and decorate using white or gray.
Northwest – affects mentor luck, breadwinner, man of the house. Hard for man to get ahead in life. Add bright lights, decorate in red or blue colors.

Bathrooms and toilets above a front door press down the luck of the whole house.

If this describes your house, make sure you have bright lights in your foyer that you can keep lighted to help offset the draining energy of the toilet above your front door. You should also try to use this bathroom as little as possible and always keep the door closed.

Bathrooms or toilets that share a wall with bed or stove create bad luck.

Bathrooms and toilets should not share a wall with either a bed or a stove. But to be clear, it’s important that the wall has a toilet, sink or shower on it and the stove or bed is on the opposite side, like in the image here.





If the bedroom or kitchen shares a wall with a bathroom, like in the image below, it’s OK. You want to be sure that the bed or stove or a desk isn’t on the same wall as a toilet, bathtub, or sink or any kind of draining water. That’s the key.





You should never see the bathroom from bed.

If your feet point toward a sink or a tub while you are in bed, you are in danger of serious loss like from cancer, major bankruptcy, serious injury or even death. You should not have your feet pointed toward a bathroom ever. Nor should you be able to see into the bathroom from bed or be opposite a bathroom while in bed. Bathrooms should also be fully enclosed with a closeable door. If your bathroom is open to your bedroom, install a door and fully enclose it to contain its negative energy.

What’s below the toilet?

In addition to what shares a wall with a toilet, you’ll always want to check what’s below your toilet when you have toilets and bathrooms on the second floor of your house. If it’s a dining room or a kitchen, your feng shui will be seriously impacted. Try to move the table or stove if it’s directly under a toilet. Otherwise, keep your dining room and kitchen lights on to help dissipate the toilet’s energy.
