Remember the Rangoli my colleagues and I made for Deepavali? Well, after the festival, I got my boys to collect all the coloured rice and place them in containers. My Hindu colleagues and students told me that the rice should not be thrown away but was used to feed to birds and insects.
The problem I faced was where to get that many birds to feed the rice. Then I remembered that there were lots of pigeons in Little India. So when I went there to buy some peacock feathers with Lai Yoong, I brought one container along and had a fine time feeding the birds.
