Whenever there is a special religious festival, I will light candles at home in front of the Goddess Kuan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. In Buddhism, Kuan Yin is sometimes known as the Female Buddha. Kuan Yin or the Goddess of Mercy is also worshipped by the Taoists.
During festivals, I will usuall place special Lotus shaped candles in front of my Kuan Yin shrine along with vegetarian food, drinks and flowers as a sign of respect. Symbolically candles represent the light of the Buddha's teaching and the enlightenment they add to the world.
