The Malaysian Ministry of Health has been going on and on about the damage sugary drinks does to our body system and has been trying to get people to reduce their sugar intake. However, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, this advice would fall on deaf ears for the Chinese as traditionally they would take something sweet to start off the year in the hope that the 364 other days would have a similar taste as that of sugar or honey.
This is the drink that I boiled early on the first day of the new year. The ingredients include honeyed dates, red dates, suet yee (some sort of medicinal fungus), dried longan, kei chi (wolfberry) and rock sugar. When it was ready after about half an hour of boiling, I served it to my mum and got a red packet and some auspicious wishes for my effort. All my guests who came today were also served with this drink.
