The 4th February 2010 marks the start of the new Chinese Solar year (often referred to as Li Chun or Arrival of Spring) of the Metal Tiger. This is not the same as the Chinese Lunar New Year – celebrated by Chinese all over the world - which starts on the 14th February in 2010.
With the arrival of the Chinese Solar year comes a new set of annual stars that affect every household. Please refer to the diagram much further down which shows the annual stars for 2010. The star (or number) is a numerical representation of the “qi”, good and bad that affects the eight sectors of a house.
Before I go into each type of “qi”, how they influence us and more importantly how to manage them, I would first like to mention Taisui (Grand Jupiter) which moves to NE3 in 2010.
Houses that face NE3 are said to clash with Tai Sui in 2010. Occupants of such houses are more likely to face obstacles this year. The problem is compounded if you are born in the year of the Monkey – the sign than clashes with the Tiger.
Owners living in such houses should ideally not carry out any serious renovation work on their house this year. By serious I mean work that involve ground breaking e.g. piling, digging and knocking down walls or structures.
If your house is not facing Tai Sui it is also a good practice not to carry out major renovations in the NE3 sector of the house. Opposite the Tai Sui is Sui Poh (SW3) of Year Breaker. You should also not renovate this sector of the house.
The energy of Three Killing influences the north in 2010. Like Tai Sui it is activated by ground breaking and knocking. The negative effects of Three Killings are obstacles (during the year), losses (monetary and otherwise) and disaster. You can avoid activating Three Killings by not renovating the north sector of your house. In addition you can minimize the effective of Three Killings by placing plants in the north sector. Pregnant women and those who are ill or recovering from an illness should not use this sector.
There are nine annual stars. Of the nine stars, number 5 (also known as Five Yellow) is the most destructive as it brings misfortunes and calamities. It afflicts the south west sector in 2010. If the main door, bedroom or places that you spend a lot of time are located in the south west, then you must “treat” this area by placing metal items there. Five Yellow is an inauspicious Earth based energy that is exhausted using metal items (earth produce metal and is weakened in the process).
Closely associated with Five Yellow is number 2 star – in the north east - that brings health problems or ailments. Like the Five Yellow it is also Earth based and the solution is to place metal items in the sector. Any metal item will do but the item of choice is the metal gourd (associated with healing).
The south east is influenced by the number 7 star which is associated with accidents and losses. The number 7 star is a metal based energy which can be neutralized by having still water in that sector (metal produce water and is weaken in the process). Place an open jar filled with water in the south east sector of the house.
The number 3 star is associated with arguments, disputes and legal problems. It influences the south sector in 2010. It is a wood type energy that can be neutralized by fire. Therefore place red colored objects or a lamp in this sector. If possible avoid having sharp objects here.
Before we proceed with the auspicious “qi”, I would like to put in a quick word about sectors. Sectors in a house are measured by referencing the center of the wall up area of a house. The open porch, backyard and garden are not included.The number 4 star that is associated with education and academic achievement as well as romance influences the north sector in 2010. If you are pursuing a course of study or looking for love, you should spend more time in this sector of your house. You can enhance this sector by placing indoor plants. The plants will also help protect against Three Killings that influence this sector too.
The number 6 star influences the east sector in 2010. This star governs authority and power. If you are in politics, management or position of power and want to strengthen your power base, you should spend more time in the east sector. You can enhance this area using earthenware objects.
The west sector is influenced by the number 1 star that governs personal growth, recognition and reputation. You should use this sector if you are in the field of education.
The north east sector is influenced by the number 9 star. This star influences happy events that can include promotion, marriage etc.
The number 8 star moves to the center of the house. The star is considered the most auspicious as it influences wealth and career success. It is best if used as a bedroom, home office or study room. You can also enhance this sector using earthenware items.
The renovation rules above applies if you are living in the house. If the house is vacant then you can renovate anytime. It is however a good practice to select an auspicious day to start work. The rationale is that if you do not live in the house, the negative consequence of breaking the renovation rules cannot affect you. You are simply not there to be influenced!
There you go, the energies influenced by the 9 stars and how to ‘manage’ them.
