NOT JUST ABSTAINING FROM MEAT

My Indian neighbours, Mrs Segar and her daughter came over to my house a couple of hours ago bringing with them Deepavali goodies. Unfortunately, I can't eat most of the food as they contain eggs since I am on a vegetarian diet.
However, going on a strict vegetarian diet for the Nine Emperor God Festival does not only mean abstaining from meat or wine but also includes no sexual activities, no gambling, no killing, no consumption of alcohol, no usage of foul language, no evil thoughts or fantasies. This is especially so for those who take up temporary residence at the temple premises.
Anyway the objective for going on such a diet is an act of self-purification. By doing so, the devotee will be able to purify both body and mind and in the process acquire merits. If possible, the food that is taken should be simple and not lavish as the purpose is to experience how the poor lives.
