BLUEST ROSES

An employee of a Japanese firm is holding bouquets of their genetically modified blue roses in the newspaper yesterday and was really attracted to them. The blue roses, named the 'Applause', are created by implanting the gene that leads to the synthesis of the blue pigment Delphinidin in pansies. Japan's Suntory Ltd. said it would start selling the world's first genetically-modified pastel blue roses next month in Japan, 20 years after it began research to create the novelty flowers. One stem of each rose is expected to be sold for US$22 to US$35 in Japan.

If you ask me, I think the roses look more purple than blue. Personally, I have seen blue roses being sold in Cameron Highlands but these were artificially coloured.

As it is almost rather difficult to get such true blue roses, they traditionally signify mystery or attaining the impossible. They are believed to be able to grant the owner youth or grant wishes.
