GREEN FOREST, MY HOME 绿光森林

I must admit that the reason why I am watching this drama series is because of Ethan Ruan 阮经天 in his days acting as second fiddle to the main actor. It was because I so enjoyed his performance in ‘Fated to Love You’ 命中注定我爱你alongside Joe Chen that I wanted to see more of him. Of course, I first saw him acting in Hanazakarino Kimitachihe alongside Wu Chun 吴尊but he only played a supporting role. Besides, the focus was centered on Chun, Ella and Jiro Wang plus the dog 一次郎.
Altogether there are fifteen CDs and so far I have watched 7 which means I have another 8 more to go. It stars Leon Williams 立威廉, a Singaporean model turned actor based in Taiwan. The plot is somewhat like a fairy tale where the prince-like William Spencer made a childhood promise to Sophie, a girl he fancied when they were both children. His promise was that he would protect her and make her his princess. They were then separated but William promised to come back for her some day. At the same time, there was another boy, Owen, who had also fallen in love with Sophie at the same time. Again, this boy had to leave to continue his studies in England.
Forward 20 years and we have the three all grown-up. William is now the executive director of the music academy, Owen has become a world renowned violinist and Sophie a music teacher at the Green Forest Music School which happens to be under the aegis of the Spencer Music Academy. To add spice to the story, there is this scheming and conniving adopted elder sister of Sophie by the name of Susan who is after everything she has including both William and Owen. Oh what a tangled web the four leads get into with all the misunderstandings and also sacrifices. Well, that is what I have watched so far. It is a rather interesting watch. The actresses who take on the roles of Sophie and Susan manage to play their parts convincingly. Leon Williams appeared to be only going through the motions and I guess the role was written with him in mind. He appears to be acting for a music video. His saving grace is his good looks and also a role that appears to have been tailored to suit this Eurasian shuai ker.
Personally I think the character of the heroine, Sophie, is more suited to the passionate and natural Owen portrayed by Ethan as she is spunky and speaks her mind; not really suited for the prim and proper life led by the Spencers.
A discerning viewer will know it when you put an actor who can really act against another who is there because he looks good. Of course, the ladies would swoon over the English speaking gentlemanly hero but how will he fare in more demanding roles that require a whole gamut of emotions. Thank goodness they did not choose Leon Williams to take on the leading role in Fated to Love You. I doubt that it would have broken all the records it did if Ethan was not paired with Joe. To be fair to Ethan, he does not lose out in the looks department either.
