In the July 2002 issue of Asia Times magazine, it was reported that 1 million Taiwanese folks underwent plastic surgery 整容手術 in year 2001 alone, which is approximately 4.5% of the total of 23 million Taiwanese. The figures for Chinese, Koreans and Japanese going under the knife are also very high but I have no reliable source to cite the numbers. It is 2008 now and I cannot imagine how many more Chinese, Taiwanese, Koreans and Japanese have opted to enhanced their looks surgically. I have nothing against cosmetic surgery and feel that if those people are willing to undergo the pain and discomfort of surgery to look better, then good luck to them.
I guess those in the entertainment industry would be the most prominent clients of the cosmetic surgeons as in their careers, looks is everything. It appears that they would want to model their looks according to Caucasion standards, big deep set eyes with doublie eyelids, long, straight nose and oval shaped faces. Similarly, the older artistes cannot afford to be seen with wrinkles or eyebags and hence rely on the skilful hands of the surgeons to help them erase the signs of aging.
Take a look at pictures of stars before and after surgery that I got from YouTube:
I am of the opinion that a few of the stars already were blessed with good looks (as can be seen by photographs of them taken as students) but maybe they wanted perfection and therefore undertook the surgery.
