'SPECIAL' CHILDREN

I attended a course at the Teacher's Activity Centre today and had the opportunity to see the school level Independance Celebrations of the primary schools there. The children present were all so adorable and I couldn't resist taking photographs of them and with them.

One of the participating schools had special classes for children with learning disabilities. These children were aged between 6 to 12 years. Altogether there were about 21 of them. Their teachers told me that a few of the children were autistic, a couple were retarded, one was hyperactive, another was mongoliod and the rest were very, very slow learners.

I was really taken in by the caring and loving nature of all the teachers who taught these children with special needs. They were very patient with them. The children were cute and adorable as well. In the third picture, I am with a seven-year old boy who is a hyperactive child. He is quite a clever boy and actually has not much problems learning. It is just that his attention span is very short and he is very, very active. So it does take a specially trained teacher to handle him. Besides these mentally challenged children, the school also has a class for deaf and dumb pupils as well. I am sure the teachers teaching these children are just as professional and caring as their counterparts who deal with the first set of children. As an educator, I feel proud to be in the company of these dedicated teachers who make a career of making sure that these little ones be able to fend for themselves and to be able to integrate into society. They have my admiration and respect.
