FASTING FOR CHARITY

Friday August 22, 2008
Fighting poverty through fasting
This weekend Malaysians from all walks of life are expected to take part in one of the country’s biggest annual fund-raising events — the World Vision 30-hour Famine.
The event, organised by World Vision Malaysia, will see participants ranging from students, professionals to celebrities voluntarily giving up solid foods to raise funds for those in need. The experience is supposed to be an eye-opener for these individuals about the reality of hunger that the poor face daily.
Adopting a “Do-It-Yourself” format, 9,500 Malaysians located in over 57 camps throughout the country will also be conducting their own mini Famine camps beginning 10am tomorrow for 26 hours.
All participants will come together for the last four hours (noon till 4pm on Aug 24) for the finale at the National Hockey Stadium Bukit Jalil.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong would be officiating at the closing ceremony.

World Vision Malaysia CEO Liew Tong Ngan said the new format had allowed more Malaysians to take part.
“The good response goes to show that Malaysians have taken up the challenge of being agents of change, using their abilities to help those in need,” he said.
This year the event organiser had targeted to raise around RM1mil and the money would be channelled to various local and international humanitarian and charitable organisations.
Local celebrities have also come forward to support the cause. The final four hours will be a star-studded event.
This year’s ambassador for the event, popular singer-songwriter Michael Wong will perform alongside other popular artistes suchs as Owen Yap and Gary Yap, Miss Malaysia/World 2007 Deborah Henry, Sam of Radio 988 and Terry of RedFM.
World Vision Child Sponsorship Ambassador Francisca Peter would lend her star power to the event together with Malaysian Idol winner Daniel Lee, Point Blanc, T4C (Tenors 4 Christ), John and Desiree from Project Superstar, and Tate and Yise.
There are special performances by the National Cheerleading Team Charm All Stars, the children of Shemariah Foster Home and communities of Beautiful Gates Foundation.
Those who miss out on the mini Famine camps could join the finale concert by contributing a pre-set amount towards the event. The doors to the countdown will open from 10am onwards on Aug 24.
The event is co-organised by Sin Chew Daily and HELP University College.
