Ever seen four good looking guys cry at the same time? No. Well, look at the above pictures of Chun and his friends from Fahrenheit and you already have. The occasion was during the official launching ceremony of their website and they started crying one after the other. Obviously, it was something to do with the struggles they have to face. I think Chun started crying after a recorded message by his dad and also he was missing his mum very much. There is a saying in Chinese that only blood should flow from a man but not tears. Sort of embarassing, you see. Well, in this modern day and age, it is okay for men to cry as it is a way to help release pent-up emotions. Let's continue with the subject of TEARS. The Chinese (and I think the English) have this belief that giving someone a handkerchief as a present is not a good idea. Why? It is because handkerchiefs symbolize wiping away tears and could suggest that the giver expects the recipient to be doing a lot of crying in the future. Hopefully, the fans of the boys know this and refrain from giving their idols hankies.
Here are other beliefs about taboo gifts:
- Don't give knives, scissors, letter or can openers as gifts since they are sharp objects and represent cutting a relationship. If you happen to get one such gift, one way to overcome it is to hand over a coin to the giver to symbolize that you bought the object and re-establish the bond between you.
- Don't give an empty wallet, purse, or briefcase to someone as a present as it represents the emptiness and lack of prosperity. If you still insist on such a gift then one way is to fill it with coins or paper currency.
- Cactus or other spiky or thorny plants are No Nos when it comes to giving gifts. Also avoid giving roses with the thorns still on the stem because these can pierce a relationship.
- Don't ever give clocks or other timepieces to a Chinese person as presents that show the time symbolize a limited life span.
