Quite a number of households and businessess invite lion dance troupes to perform during the Chinese New Year. It is as a symbolic ritual to usher in the Lunar New Year as well as to evict bad spirits from the premises.When I visited the Kuan Yin temple on the second day of the new year, I witnessed a lion dance performance. The steps were slightly different from the normal ones as it was performed in front of thedeities. I also noticed that the dancers inside the two lions had to crawl up the steps and they made sure not to show their backs when performing in front of the deities. They used moved backwards when retreating.
