On the first day of the Chinese lunar new year, I was taught from a young age to wear a brand new pair of wooden clogs the moment I wake up and walk around in them. The purpose for doing so is like sort of symbolically step on any persons who might wish to do us harm for that year. These "little persons" ( (小人) are so termed because they could wreak havoc in our daily lives by the nasty deeds that they do, like for instance, gossip, spread lies, back stab, cheat or physically hurt us. Is it effective? I can't really say. Call it superstition but I do practise it as it has become sort of a traditional as well as habitual thing that I do during Chinese New Year. Believe me, it is fun walking around the house and making the click clack sound in the early morning of the first day of the new year. Also, if it works then we might have already done something positive to make the year better, happier and more peaceful.
At the time of writing, I have yet to purchase my new pair of clogs. I want a beautifully painted pair. One with lovely designs painted on them.
