Petai or Chou Tou in Cantonese (translated to mean Stink Beans). You either love it or hate it. Eating petai or bitter beans is an acquired taste. Me? I absolutely love it. I can eat it raw but love it most when cooked with sambal.
Diabetics are encouraged to eat petai as it helps to regulate their glucose levels. Those who are feeling depressed can try to eat more petai as it contains tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, consuming a few pods can help one to relax and improve your mood. Those who are anaemic are also encouraged to eat petai as it contains high amounts of iron. This stinky bean is also said to help reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke as it is high in potassium but low in salt.
