SWEET PUMPKIN 'ANG KU'
Ang Ku Kuih 紅龜粿 is a small red round oval shaped Chinese cake with soft sticky skin wrapped with sweet filling in the centre. This oval shaped Nyonya Kuih or cake is designed to resemble a tortoise. When translated directly from the Hokkien Dialect Ang Ku Kuih is Red Tortoise Cake. Symbolically the Ang Ku Kuih symbolises good luck and longevity. Usually the Chinese use Ang Ku Kueh for ritual offerings during religious festivals, birthdays and the full moon of a child. Traditionally, the Ang Ku Kuih is red in colour but nowadays, it comes in different colours.
The ones above which were sold at the Kampung Simee market are orange in colour. The lady who sold them to me told me that the colouring came directly from the sweet pumpkin that she had used to make them.
