BETEL LEAVES

The betel leaves (Piper betle) or sirih in the Malay language in my school herb garden is growing healthily nowadays as compared to a couple of months ago.  At that time, the plant was a sorry sight. What I did was to keep pruning it.  Luckily, we had a lot of rain in recent weeks and that helped a lot.
In many parts of South India and Southeast Asia, there are some who have cultivated the habit of chewing betel leaves.  I have read reports linking oral cancer to the chewing leaves.  Thank goodness, my mum and aunt do not have such a habit, neither do I.
However, I do make use of betel leaves a lot as one of the ingredients for herbal baths as they have this property to draw wind out of the body.
