TALES OF THE 24 EXEMPLARS: YEN TZU

Filial Piety of Yen Tzu (1122 B.C.)

This is the story of Yen Tzu whose aged parents suffered from eye problem.   The physician recommended deer milk as medication for their ailment. Yen Tzu disguised as a fawn to get the deer milk.  After drinking the deer milk, his parents' eyes became better and so he continued getting more. Once he met a hunter who mistook him as a real fawn and nearly shot him. He told the hunter the reason for his disguise.

Here's the poem in praise of Yen Tzu:
His parents do like to drink the milk of deer,
They do not know the price of it's dear.
He must wear the fur of fawn,
Almost is killed by the hunter with fear.
