I watched the Korean drama, 'Naughty Kiss' in which the friends of the heroine were gushing over the small face of the hero's mum. In another drama, "Heartstrings", three of the supporting characters were making fun of the big face of the heroine.
I am sure that many of us are not so obsessed about the size of our faces unlike the South Koreans.
Below you see a picture of a Korean singer, Koh Ara whose face is being measured. It seems that it is only 17 cm (6.69 inches). Read also the article about the Korean obsession with face size and beauty that accompanies the picture.
Why is this number so special? Well, 17 refers to the age of Hazel-eyed model/actress Koh A-ra(17) as well as the length of her face! So you are probably asking – what’s the deal with having a small face. Well, everything! Having a small face is one prerequisite of beauty in this country – check out all the stars, most have small faces. Small face size is something that is difficult to attain unless you are born with it or have undergone painful jaw reduction surgery (for a rounder/heart-shaped face). So many people talk about face size and compare their size with everyone else’s- including stars. They are fascinated by those who are both beautiful and those who have small faces (the beautiful are assumed to have small faces). Perhaps the small-face phenomenon is a direct result of the stars from the western world having smaller faces. Similarly, the near national obsession with plastic surgery is for the purpose of attaining more western features – larger nose, bigger eyes, and slimmer face. West is not always best. Why can’t we just accept ourselves the way we are?
In Malaysia and many Asian countries, the young men and women (and the not so young) are drooling over the good looking South Korean male and female celebrities. Hmm ... do they know that a great number of these handsome and beautiful people had plastic surgery. I read that in Korea, the most popular form of plastic surgery is for double eyelids and also to widen the eyes.
Actually, there are a lot more beautiful girls and handsome boys in my country who do not need to go for surgery to enhance their looks. As far as I am concerned, many of my students have beautiful eyes.
Look at the little girl posing for the photograph above with me. Here name is Aina. She came along to school with her sister yesterday morning. The little girl is about 7 years old and already one can see that she is strikingly beautiful. Her eyelashes are to die for and she has beautifully shaped eyes and brows plus a small face. Now here is one young lady whom I am certain is 100% natural. Her elder sister, Ain is also very attractive. What I am trying to say is that we do not need to be in awe of the 'beauty' of the South Korean celebrities as in our countries, there are natural beauties who look great even without make-up or photoshop.
