FENG SHUI OF ROOFS

It may sound peculiar that the roof of a house has an effect on its Feng Shui. A quick look at any surviving historical building in China will reveal that the roof is a very important consideration during its construction stage. The roof designs of these buildings may vary in shape and details, but they are all proportionate to the size of the building.
In Feng Shui, the roof of the house is akin to the hat we wear on our head. We cannot wear one that is either to small or too big our head. The same principle applies to the roof of the house, and although we may want to adorn hats of all artistic designs as a fashion statement, we cannot do the same for the roof if we want to enhance the Feng Shui of the house.

Figure 9-1: Roofs with a well-balanced design will improve the Feng Shui of a house

The rule of thumb for the roofs of houses is that they must be well-balanced in shape and size, and preferably have its highest point in the middle of its design. For example, the typical A-shaped roof is good for Feng Shui, while a V-shaped roof is bad for Feng Shui. Some of the points to look for in a Feng Shui compliant roof designs are:
1.
Roofs with a well-balanced shape that will help distribute the Qi from the Heavens evenly around the house and property. Since the Cosmic Trinity that governs the effectiveness of a Feng Shui application is affected by Heaven Qi, this is a very important factor to consider. (Figure 8f) shows a typical roof design for good Feng Shui..
2.
The size of the roof must be proportionate to the size of the house. It should not be too big that it overhangs the width and breadth of the house. An oversized roof can also make the house too Yin by blocking out natural sunlight and this will have a negative impact on the auspiciousness of the living space inside the house.
3.
Roofs can be multi-tiered or staggered but common sense must prevail in your observations. As long as the roof is balanced to the left and right of its apex, it is generally well accepted.
4.
A pyramidal roof is also considered a good shape as long as the pyramid is not lopsided
5.
The roof must be strongly constructed to withstand severe weather conditions and should be leak-proof.
6.
The roof must be regularly maintained to prevent physical deterioration and mossy growth.
