FENG SHUI DON'TS FOR ROOFS

Roof designs that defy symmetry are not considered good for Feng Shui. These may be the result of the architects’ artistic desires to come up unique, or out of the norm designs, but in terms of Feng Shui, they do not enhance the auspiciousness of the house itself, let alone its internal living space. Some of the roof shapes to avoid for residential homes are detailed below:

1.
An oversized roof that have huge overhangs over the sides of the house. This type of roof will look like someone wearing a Sombrero (Mexican hat). The overhang will block natural sunlight and make the interiors too Yin.

2.
A roof that is slanted to one side is bad for Feng Shui as it will divert auspicious Heaven Qi to one side of the house. In turn, the living space in the house will not be evenly nourished by this Qi and the Cosmic Trinity of the Feng Shui application will eventually be undermined. See Figure 9-1a and Figure 9-1b.

3.
A semi-circular or domed roof is a bad design for a residential home, even if it is symmetrical in shape. The inherent semi-circular shape of these designs is considered the cutting edge of a knife and as such, will undermine the Feng Shui of the home. We usually do not put so much emphasis for public buildings with such roofs, as there are no long-term residents staying there. See Figure 8-1c.

4.
A V-shaped roof with it highest points at the sides of the house. This roof design channels all the Heaven Qi into the centre groove of the roof and as such will prevent the Qi from even permeating to the surroundings. See Figure 8-1d

5.
A flat roof is a bad design for a residential home as it will trap Heaven Qi on the rooftop, preventing it from dispersing evenly to the home.

6.
Roof designs must not emulate the roofs of temples and palaces, as these designs will bring undesirable energies into the home that will seriously undermine the auspiciousness of the living space.

7.
Avoid roofs that are weakened by age and decay, or are damaged through mistreatment and poor maintenance.
