The books shown in the above pictures were sponsored by patrons of a Taoist temple in Ipoh. Actually one can find quite a number of books on Taoism and Buddhism sponsored by kindred souls and placed in places of worship for visitors to the temples.
Some of the books contain prayers while some have illustrations on the punishments meted on souls who had committed a lot of sins when they were alive. It was hoped that the sight of these frightful pictures would be a deterrent for humans to sin.
