WEARING RED FOR GOOD LUCK, PROSPERITY, FORTUNE AND HAPPINESS

Red clothing is the preference for Chinese on New Year’s Day. This tradition dates back thousands of years. The colour red represents happiness and joy for the Chinese.   By wearing red clothes, you bring more happiness and joy to the people around you. People wear red on the first few days of the lunar New Year because red represents prosperity, fortune, and luck. Ultimately, red is worn because it symbolises happiness.

Like most Chinese, I would make sure that the piece of clothing that I wear on the first day of year is red.  See, I have on a red blouse and pink jeans for the first day of the day.  Actually, I also purchased red coloured underwear.  What to do?  I am very Kiasu (fear of losing out to others).

It is a Chinese belief that by wearing red on New Year’s Day the wearer will be ensured a bright and happy year. However, some Feng Shui masters beg to differ and say that there are some individuals who need to avoid wearing red on new year’s day as it may be counter productive to their fortunes.  Anyway, in general it is okay for almost everyone to be in red for the first few days of the new year.
