A DYING ART: MAKING LION HEADS

I read from the newspaper article in the Star that the Sifu demonstrating the art of making lion heads at the Perak Lost Living Heritage Exhibition was the last of his kind in Perak.  In the interview, he said that the younger generation was simply not interested to take up the trade.  However, it seems that he as one or two apprentices who are learning the trade from him.
It takes about 10 days of hard work and perseverance to complete a single lion head: four days to build the frame from bamboo strips, then another few more days to stick it with paper and then paint and varnish it.  When completed each lion head is sold at a cost of RM1,000.
The Exhibition is still on at the Garden Villa.  The address is 5, Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah (Gopeng Road), Ipoh.  It opens daily from 11.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and will be on until this Sunday.
