BAD LUCK SENT A-SAILING



In Taoism, an effigy of a paper ship is used as a mean of transport to the spiritual realms.  Very often during festivals, such an effigy is built and then the sifu or medium would have a blessing ceremony before the ship is burnt.  The burning would signify sending the ship back to the spiritual realm and with it all the illness, misfortune and bad luck of the devotees.
The pictures below show the Sifu carrying out the blessing ceremony of the ship during the Jade Emperor Festival last weekend.  The Sifu would dot the ship with cinnabar as part of the blessing process.
