Whenever there is a choice of ulam for lunch at the school canteen, I would undoubtedly choose the banana flower as I find them utterly delicious.  In Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries, banana flowers or banana hearts are used as a vegetable.  They are eaten as ulam (raw) or steamed with dips like sambal belacan and sambal tempoyak.
