Ah Ha! It seems that it is not only the man-in-the-street that is guilty of buying pirated DVDs. We get all these adverts telling us that we shouldn't buy pirated stuff as it would cripple the entertainment industry since it would affect the bread and butter of those in the industry. Then I read this article about Taiwanese hearthrob, Jerry Yan, buying quite a bit of the illegal stuff. Anyway, I don't think he would be much affected if people buy pirated copies of his shows and movies. The guy earns millions in endorsements and appearances.Here is the article I was talking about.
TAIWANESE artiste Jerry Yan is a big buyer of pirated DVDs.
The singer-cum-actor was said to have spent over RM5,000 to buy some 2,000 copies of pirated DVDs over a few weeks.
Yan, who is also a member of the popular boy band F4, had purchased the discs while filming a Taiwan idol drama in Hangzhou, China in July.
During his free time, he had stayed in the hotel and watched DVDs.
Sources said it was during that few weeks that he had made the purchases.
A copy of a pirated DVD is sold at RMB5 (RM2.50) in China.
Guang Ming Daily reported that when the filming was over, Yan had shipped the discs back to his home in Taiwan in a few boxes.
Yan’s manager Fenny admitted that the idol had purchased the pirated discs but denied that he had bought as many as 2,000 copies.
She said most of the DVDs purchased by Yan were legal copies.
Besides Yan, popular Hong Kong film director Vincent Kuk Tak-chiu and song write Lum Jik had also been caught by the paparazzi buying pirated discs in the Special Administrative Region.
They had apologised for their act.
