I read in the newspaper that the first two musk melons from Shizuoka in Japan were auctioned off at a ridiculous expensive price. If my memory serves me, it was about a few thousand US dollars.
Normally the fruit would cost around (USS$55 to USs$100). I can get one big watermelon for RM8.00 or less than US$2.00. So what is it about this fruit that makes it so darn expensive?

It seems that only a few such melons are grown on a single tree; others get removed so as to allow the nutrients to concentrate on the remaining fruit. This would result in a very, very sweet, juicy, and tender melon. The quality of the melon is assured and that includes even shape of the perfectly round melon.
The musk melon is in the same family as the cantaloupe. The Cantaloupe is a source of polyphenol antioxidants, chemicals which are known to provide certain health benefits to the cardiovascular system and immune system. These chemicals are known to up regulate the formation of nitric oxide, a key chemical in promoting health of the endothelium and prevention of heart attacks. Cantaloupes also are an excellent source of vitamin C and beta carotene.
