REASONS WHY SOME CHINESE PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR NAMES

Here are two. reasons why people change their Chinese names:
  1. Some people find that the pronunciation of their names are embarrassing or unfavourable. I had one friend whose name was Foo Tai Choon (in Cantonese these sounds like the man has very large scrotums) and he never used his Chinese name, preferring to be called Eddie.
  2. If a person finds that they have had a lot of misfortune and that their life had not been smooth sailing then they should get their Ba Zi checked and then maybe later change the name to match the Ba Zi.

One must remember that the pronunciation or tone of the name should be the same as the old name. If one changes ones name to a one with a totally different pronunciation or tone, then he or she is committing an ethical offence of filial piety. Also, a Chinese person who wishes to change his or name must get the approval and blessings of their parents.
