Onions contain a substance (N-propyl disulphide) which destroys red blood cells in the cat, causing a form of anemia calledHeinz body anemia. Garlic contains a similar substance in a lesser amount.
My sister mentioned this to me sometime back. I was left wondering who in their right mind would feed their pets garlic or onion. And then of course you have to wonder what pet in their right mind would eat garlic or onion. The answer would appear to be people and pets not in their right minds.
Kevin, Here in Malaysia, people like to feed their pets food that they eat which might be cooked with garlic and onions. I don't do that. The vet told me to feed Junior with pet food only.
I usually feed my cats (4) and dogs (2) pet food but I sometimes supplement that with offal such as as ox's or sheep's hearts, liver and kidneys. However I have taken a recent liking to said offal - as it has virtually no fat - so the pets are missing out. And yes, as in Malaysia we feed our pets food that we eat. I guess I should be careful as to what is in it.

And I was also told not to feed Junior avocados. Now how in their right minds would feed that to cats?
