Some Chinese would buy ornamental pineapple plants to decorate their gardens to welcome the new year. To them the pineapple is a symbol of good luck. In Hokkien it is called Ong Lai and in Cantonese Wong Lai, both of which sounds like good fortune coming my way.
These pineapples are known as dwarf pineapple (Ananas bracteatus `Striatus'), they are grown more as ornamental rather than edible fruit.
