TROJAN HORSE IN TROY

Lai Yoong sent me these two pictures of a giant wooden horse when she visited the ancient city of Troy recently.  Now this is by no means the real Trojan Horse but just a re-constructed one which is placed at the entrance to the tourist site.
If you are familiar with Greek Mythology, then you'd know why this horse came into existence.  Mention of the horse can be found in Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad. According to Iliad, this is where the legendary Trojan War took place.
Legend has it that there was this princess by the name of Helen and whose beauty was unrivalled at that time.  Helen who was the daughter of the king of Sparta was abducted by Paris, a Trojan prince.  Now this sparked enmity between the Trojans and Achaeans from across the Aegean Sea. Having been unable to break into the defensive walls of the city, the Achaeans came up with a plan to trick the Trojans by offering  a huge wooden horse as a gift to them in order to make peace.  The Trojans accepted the offer sincerely, but this resulted in them losing their city, as hidden inside the horse were Achaean soldiers.  The Trojans took the horse into their walled city and celebrated the retreat of their enemies.  Little did they know that when they were asleep from all the drinking and merry-making, the Achaean soldiers climbed out and took over their city.
