PHONETIC SKILLS THEN AND NOW

The topic that I am teaching my Year 2 classes in college this week is dictionary skills.  When we came to the part of phonetic symbols I told them that during my college days, I had to memorise the symbols to help me pronounce the words for my linguistics class.
Back in those days, the Internet and the World Wide Web were at their infancy and not available to the masses.  Also the information and data was  not as bountiful as present day.  My students who were born in the cyberage would not have much problem looking up the pronunciation of a word as they just need to get online and search for it, then click to listen to how it is pronounced.
