WHITE BITTER GOURD

The bitter gourds or bitter melons that we have here in Malaysia are green in colour.  At least the ones that I buy from the market are this colour.  Well it seems that white coloured ones can be found in other Asian countries.
White Bitter melons (Momordica charantia) are basically the same as Bitter Green melons and there is not much difference except for their coloring. Bitter melons are a member of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family, and a relative of squash and watermelon.  It tastes bitterl due to the level of quinine in the fruit. Bitter melons contain a concentrated amount of quinine, which is why it can be used as a cure (and preventive medicine) for Malaria.
