BUNGA TELUR (EGG FLOWERS)

What I am holding up above is the Bunga Telur Gantung (Hanging Egg Flowers). During a Malay wedding each guest will receive a bunga telur (a decorated egg with a fabric flower) which is as a sign of fertility. You might consider it a wedding favour or door gift.
The Bunga Telur Gantung above was used during the Graduation Ceremony for my students and no eggs were used.
Traditionally the Bunga Telur used to be a single boiled egg with red-dyed shell, glued to green crepe paper shaped like a leaf and stuck or wired onto a thin bamboo stick topped with flowers of coloured crepe paper, satin or lace.  Nowadays, the egg is often replaced with sweets and candies, chocolates and cookies, sliced cake, traditional treats like dodol, bahulu, serunding, sagon (dessicated coconut mixed with sugar) et cetera.
