PLAYING WITH LANTERN

When I was a child, lanterns were made from colourful transparent paper and bamboo. They were fashioned in a myriad of shapes and sizes, from the cellophane birds to the mighty dragon and planes with glitter-covered wings. In modern times, contemporary popular lantern themes include Hello Kitty, Spiderman and Angry Bird. Another change to the traditional Chinese lantern is the introduction of battery-operated candles taking the place of lit candles.
Look at the lantern that I bought for Amir during our shopping trip to Tesco. Though it is still the seventh lunar month, the commercial places have begun selling different types of lanterns for the Mid Autumn or Moon Cake Festival which falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
Amir chose a lantern made from colourful transparent paper but with a modern twist, that of two Angry Birds. This was the first time he had ever played with a lantern and I brought him for a short walk around my housing area carrying the lit lantern. Ahhhh! This reminded me so much of a long time ago.
