SPIRAL BAMBOO

These spiral bamboo were part of the Chinese New Year goodies that were on sale at a hypermarket.  Commercial hype has made it into something that will bring luck to the home.  I am not too sure about that but I like the way the bamboo spirals.
Wonder how they manage to train the bamboo to become  curly?
Wonder no more as I managed to find the instructions on how to do it from one website.  Here it is.

How to train lucky bamboo becoming curly or spiral?
As you know, plants are always reaching to the sky, so first the grower inclines the bamboo stalk and fixes it at an angle of 15 to 20 degrees to the earth's surface. The top of the plant will reach toward the sun; on the second turn of the plant, tip the plant 90 degrees so this new growth is parallel to the earth (0 degrees). The top of the plant will again turn towards the sun. To get a spiral with two rings, a grower will have to turn the plant 9 times and will need between 110 to 120 days.

Wow!  It does sound like a lot of work and a lot of time, right?  My advise is just go buy the spiral bamboo.  It doesn't cost more than RM10 for the taller one pictured above and less than RM5.00 for the shorter ones.
