GLUTINOUS RICE FLOUR FOR TONG YUEN (RICE BALLS)

Today is the 18th of December. It is 3 days to Tong Jiet or the Winter Solstice Festival. When I was at the market this morning, the hawkers were already selling glutinous rice flour paste. To the Chinese, we are said to age a year come the Winter Solstice. To celebrate, we eat Tong Yuen or Rice Balls (汤圆) which is made from glutinous rice flour. The glutinous rice flour is mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water. The tong yuen can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled with ingredients.
