The big paper effigy of the carp would be burnt along with joss paper bearing the names and BaZi of the Taoist worshippers who had placed them there. By placing the joss paper inside the mouth of the Giant Red Carp and burning it on the birthday of one of the goddesses, it is hoped that the bad luck or ill fortune of the person would be borne away by the fish.
