Chinese Leeks
Chinese White Cabbage (Pak Choy)
When I was at the supermarket this evening, I saw many Chinese housewives choosing Leeks and decided to get some for myself as well. Besides the Leeks, I also bought Pak Choy. Both these vegetables carry auspicious meanings which are homophonous to their Chinese names. Leek in Cantonese is Suen which sounds like Count. When we say we have leeks, it would symbolise we have money to count or money in our account. Similarly, the Pak Choy sounds like a hundred types of good luck.
You see Chinese New Year is a time when people want to start the year right an symbolism plays a big part in Chinese culture.
