The media would most often highlight the glamourous lifestyles of the rich and famous. The public would get to read about the extravagances, the sex lives, the affairs and other sensational gossips about the celebrities. They should realise that their actions might influence their fans, especially the young ones.
One positive activity that involves stars is charity and social work. The latest humanitarian work is of the coming together of stars to help the victims of the Typhoon in Taiwan. It was reported that Chinese action star Jet Li unloaded relief supplies and comforted typhoon survivors last Saturday as Taiwan struggled to cope with floods and landslides. Jet Li was seen helping to unload boxes of food from trucks.
Li and Hong Kong star Andy Lau joined other celebrities in answering phones on Friday night as two televised fundraisers brought in more than 1.1 billion Taiwan dollars (33 million US dollars) to aid typhoon victims.
Hopefully, the younger generation of celebrities take a cue from these veterans and concentrate on doing something good with the power that comes with their fame. I am sure that veterans like Andy and Jet are genuine as they are famous and popular enough to not need to do this as a publicity stunt. Hopefully the young stars who jump on the bandwagon do so as an act of genuine kindness and not because it will give their image and popularity a boost.
