Both my maternal grandparents were Straits born Chinese or Peranakan. This means that their ancestors were Chinese who had assimilated a lot of Malay culture from of the forefathers who first set foot in Malaya.
What or rather made me write this post was a visitor to my school blog enquired whether I or any of my family members are in possession of a betel set. Unfortunately I don't as only my maternal grandparents were Straits born whereas my paternal grandparents were sinkheks or those who arrive in Malay at the beginning of the 20th century.
However, I found that one can purchase a set from ebay at around US$550.00.
