5 WISHES

One wedding tradition practised by the French was to give favours (gifts) were called sugared confectionery to their guests. Later 5 sugared almonds were given instead and each represented a certain wish for the bride and groom and their guests. The five sweets sugared almonds represented Health, Wealth, Happiness, Longevity and Fertility.

The Chinese in western countries have adopted this practice and they give five different coloured sweets with each sweet representing the same wish as their western counterparts. During my talk on Monday, I requested my Wanita MCA friends to give similar favours to the guests who came to attend the talk. Lai Yoong came up with the idea of putting the different coloured sweets in ang pow packets. So, those who listened to the talk not only benefitted by getting knowledge of Feng Shui, they also receive the good wishes of the organisers.
