Today is the eighth day of the lunar New Year and tonight the Chinese (mainly the Hokkiens and Toechews) will start preparing to the Jade Emperor. In Hokkien it is known as Thni Kong Seh (Jade Emperor God’s birthday). The prayers will begin on the ninth day of after midnight. They offer prayers to the Jade Emperor of Heaven (天公) in the Taoist Pantheon. The ninth day is traditionally the birthday of the Jade Emperor.
Offerings to the God will include sugarcane as it was the sugarcane that had protected the Hokkiens from certain extermination generations ago. Among the other “must-have” items are the thni kuih (sweet cakes), ang koo (red tortoise buns), mee koo (red-coloured buns), huat kuih (prosperity cakes) and bright pink miniature pagodas.
