RED EGGS AND KISS FROM NAI NAI 奶奶

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou celebrated his 30th birthday recently and his staff members prepared a tower of 30 red eggs, and a ‘2009 Flush’ poker birthday cake for him. As Jay blew out the candles, he made his birthday wish: “I hope my supporters will be in good health, like my grandma is almost 90 years old, but she won’t be out of breath when she climbs stairs, very healthy.” It was reported that his grandma went onstage to kiss him.
I was so touched by the picture of him and his grandma. Such a sweet scenario. I have read in many reports that he is both a filial son and grandson. His mum and grandma mean everything to him. It is said that his grandma or nai nai 奶奶gets taken for rides in his sports cars.
Here in Malaysia, it is not so common for birthday boys and girls to get red eggs as they just make do with a cake. Some traditionalists still make the red eggs but they are in the minority. I think that we should do so as the red eggs signify birth, life and renewal. For my coming birthday, I'll make sure I dye as many eggs as there are candles on my birthday cake to give to my friends and students. That is keeping tradition alive.
