Paper cutouts the craze this CNY

GEORGE TOWN: Paper cutouts, an ancient Chinese art, are sought after by many people this year as Chinese New Year decorative items.
Datin Ong Geok Suan, who runs two shops in Kimberly Street here, said the cutouts were selling well.
She said they were favoured by the public because of their simple and elegant designs.

“You can stick them on the wall or buy a few and hang them on the door entrance as the auspicious ang chai (red cloth).

“They are made from a type of soft paper-cotton material and if well kept, can be reused,” she said, adding that the cutouts were sold for between RM8 and RM20, depending on size.
Ong said that in olden times people used to make their own cutouts as they were the cheapest decorative item.
“People would buy red paper and cut the prints themselves.
“I learnt the skill from my mother and I can still remember the way to cut a ‘double happiness’ (shuang xi) to stick on fruits and nian gao (sweet sticky cake) as offering to the gods,” she said.
